Canaanite
worship consisted in human sacrifice, preferably first-born children,
as a burnt offering to Ba'al and consort, Astarte. This detestable
and inhuman pagan custom of slaying and then cremating the victim, also
practiced at Tyre in honor of Melcarth, was severely condemned by the Mosaic
Law and was made punishable by the death of the guilty party (Lev.18,21;
20, 2-5)
